Ready for Spring Sailing

⛵ Ready for May 14th? The Ultimate Prep Guide to Your First “Learn to Sail” Class

Congratulations! You’ve signed up for the Edison Boat Club Learn to Sail program. Whether you’re eyeing the nimble Flying Scot or the classic Crescent, there is no better way to experience the Detroit River and Lake St. Clair than from behind the tiller.

As our first on-the-water session on May 14th approaches, the excitement is building. However, sailing in Michigan in early May requires a bit of strategy. The air might feel like spring, but the water is still cold enough to steal your body heat in minutes.

To help you stay warm, dry, and focused on learning, we’ve put together this essential guide on what to wear and what to bring.

🧥 The “Peel” Strategy: Mastering the Layers

On the Detroit River, the “Micro-Climate” is real. It is often 10–15 degrees cooler on the water than it is at the clubhouse.

The Golden Rule: No Cotton. In the sailing world, “Cotton is Rotten.” Once cotton (jeans, hoodies, T-shirts) gets wet from rain or spray, it stays wet, gets heavy, and makes you cold. Instead, dress in layers:

  • Base Layer: Moisture-wicking athletic gear (polyester or wool) to keep skin dry.
  • Mid Layer: A fleece pullover or wool sweater to trap heat.
  • Outer Layer: A windproof and waterproof “shell” or rain jacket. This is your shield against the “Detroit Chill” and waves.

👟 Footwear: Protect the Boat (and Your Toes)

Your connection to the boat happens through your feet. The deck of a Flying Scot or Crescent can become slippery when wet.

  • Requirements: You must wear closed-toe shoes with non-marking rubber soles.
  • Why? Dark-soled shoes leave “scuff” streaks on the white fiberglass decks that are a pain to clean. Flip-flops and sandals offer zero traction and lead to stubbed toes.
  • Top Pick: Clean sneakers (like Vans) or dedicated boat shoes (Sperry) are perfect.

🎒 Build Your “Sailing Go Bag”

Don’t scramble every week! Keep a dedicated bag by the door with these essentials:

  • PFD (Life Jacket): EBC provides these, but a personal Type III USCG-approved vest ensures the best fit and comfort.
  • Sailing Gloves: Protect your hands from rope burn. Pro Tip: Cheap gardening gloves with rubber palms work wonders!
  • Polarized Sunglasses: Essential for seeing gusts on the water. Use a leash/strap (Croakies) so they don’t end up at the bottom of the river.
  • Sunscreen & Hat: Even on cloudy days, the reflection off Lake St. Clair will burn you fast.
  • Water Bottle: Stay hydrated, but remember: No glass on the boats.

⏱️ The “Last-Minute” 2-Minute Drill

Rushing out the door and just realized you have class tonight? Grab these 5 things and go:

  1. Any Windbreaker/Rain Jacket
  2. Sneakers (No open toes!)
  3. Water Bottle
  4. Sunglasses
  5. A Change of Clothes (Keep these in your car for the ride home).
